Homeowners treated unfairly

Editor:

It seems that our government speaks out of both sides of its mouth.

For several years the government has advocated and given grants (although, at this time I was told, there is no grant money in the pot until next April) for homeowners who feel, perhaps, morally bound, to upgrade to more energy-efficient ways of heating their homes.

Now, it seems, the government wants to penalize those same homeowners who went to the trouble and expense of upgrading their home-heating systems by proposing a discriminatory tax rebate only for oil consumers. “Go OIL, P.E.I. Go OIL”, the government seems to be shouting loudly and clearly or is Irving, shipping in every drop of oil that Islanders consume, holding the government to some kind of ransom?
