Editor: We wish to express our support for the proposal to once again open a childcare facility at Beach Grove. Our son Stephen was one of the fortunate children to have been in that program in the early 1980s when he attended one year of kindergarten at this facility.
At that time, as parents we did wonder how the program would work, but there was no need to worry as it turned out to be a wonderful experience for our son. The interaction between the seniors and the children was amazing. Just to recall a few of the experiences that Stephen would relay to us, we would like to share the following. Stephen would help a gentleman by the name of Tom in exercise class because he said Tom could not bend his fingers easily. Stephen loved to take part in all the activities involving the seniors, but Tom and Ivan — the bubble gum man — were special. When Tom had to go into hospital, all the children were quite concerned about how he was getting along. One evening while we were out driving, Stephen asked if he could go to visit Tom at the hospital, so we did and had a wonderful visit. Stephen related how excited all the children were when Tom returned to the home from the hospital.
Since we had not spoken about this in years, we called Stephen at his home in Ontario to ask if he remembered attending this facility. He related that his memories were all positive – except, as he laughingly recalled, “When I lost my kite; but I wished that such a facility was available here for my own children.”
