Grand deception at Meech Lake

Editor: It appears that the 14 or so provincial, federal and territorial finance ministers, meeting formally in Meech Lake recently, have successfully pulled off one of the grandest and most elaborate deceptions in Canada’s history.

These 14 ministers, facing combined debts and financial commitments of over two trillion dollars, did not manage to consider this on their agenda. Nor did the press of the country comment on this failure.

Instead, the only subject seemingly considered was increasing the taxes Canadians pay into the Canada Pension Plan. This plan was not accepted but it will be a "deception which keeps on giving" as both Ontario and this province promise to consider going it alone.
