SUMMERSIDE - Environment Canada is calling it a "sneaky" system.

The agency says the weather system that moved into the Maritimes throughout the day Sunday and into Monday brought an estimated 15 to 20 cm of snow to the Summerside area.

The national weather service had originally called for five to 10 cm of snow for the county.

“That was a sneaky little system. Where we expected the heaviest snow was going to fall was actually about 100 kilometres north of that line,” said Jeremy March, a meteorologist with Environment Canada in Halifax.

Charlottetown Airport clocked in at 19 cm of snow in that 24-hour period.

RCMP reported a handful of minor motor-vehicle accidents and the Confederation Bridge implemented height restrictions throughout the day because of the winds.

Trash pickup in Prince County was also affected.

Blue bag and cart collections in the county were cancelled with only blue bags receiving an alternate pickup date of Dec. 29.

Island Waste Management Corporation said there were no alternate dates available to do a cart pickup.

Islanders are also being warned of another weather system moving into the area for Tuesday.

Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick are expected to take the brunt of the snow from that system, but P.E.I. is expected to receive between five and 10 cm of light, fluffy snow, which will likely start early in the afternoon and continue into the night. Winds are expected to be minor at 20 to 40 km/h.

“Locally there might be a little bit of drifting snow, but you’re not going to see whiteout conditions,” said March.

As for later in the week and the major holiday of New Year’s Eve, March said that his latest projections were calling for the night to be a wet affair, with a good chance of flurries turning to showers.
