Coun. Tina Mundy

SUMMERSIDE — A city councillor has announced she will not be reoffering in the Nov. 3 civic election.

Tina Mundy made the announcement during the August council meeting Monday night.

She said the reason she was announcing this early is to give others an opportunity to consider running for public office. Mundy said she has accomplished what she set out to do and it’s time to move on.

“I had some definite goals that I wanted to achieve and with the help of council I did just that. My reasons for running for council four years ago was an extension of my community service. I have been a passionate volunteer in my community for many, many years and this was just an extension of it.”

Mundy said coming in four years ago it was a council comprised of five new members.

“We had three councillors with much experience and the second longest serving mayor in the country so we had a lot of experience behind us,” she said. “Over the last four years we’ve really jelled and complemented each other at the end of the day.”

During her time in office, Mundy was able to make anti-bullying a priority for the city. She helped partner together the city and East Prince Women’s Information Centre on a 24-month project to combat cyberbullying.

One of Mundy’s major accomplishments was working with city council to reach an agreement on a new fire hall for the city.

She was also involved in the planning and execution of the successful “GoLobster” campaign that was launched this past July in Summerside. As city liaison to the Lobster Festival and past president of the Lobster Carnival committee, she also helped the city act as a steward to help restore the event that was recently rebranded and featured new attractions in its latest edition.

During her term in office, Mundy has been chairwoman of police, fire and emergency services, and co-chair of technical services and planning board. She has also served as chairwoman of human resources and legal affairs, and chairwoman of Culture Summerside.

Mundy didn’t divulge any future plans but she did say she’s looking at new opportunities.

“There are lots of opportunities out there and lots of battles to be fought. When I finish up one I move on to the next. I’m going to take some time to be with my family and reflect before making any decision, but there are some definite things that I would like pursue but it would be a little premature to announce anything at this minute.”
