Charlottetown Rural High School, home of ambassador Brett Robinson, raises more than $24,000 for campaign
Charlottetown Rural High School, home of Grade 10 student and Easter Seals ambassador Brett Robinson, raised $24,246 in less than eight weeks for the Easter Seals campaign.
That’s approximately three times more money than any previous school ever raised.
Brett was welcomed home Thursday from a tour of 65
schools across the Island to a standing ovation and the loud cheers of his fellow high school students.
He was at a loss of words after hearing the total amount his school raised.
“I don’t how to say . . .” he said, through the assistance of a communication device.
Kathy Hodson, the committee co-chairwoman for the Easter Seals campaign and event organizer at the school, says she is so proud of the students and their support of Brett.
“It’s really amazing to just sit back and watch the pride they have for Brett and with Brett
being a Grade 10 student, he’s relatively new to the school, but everybody has embraced
him and they’re just so accepting and proud that he came from here.”
Hodson says the amount of support from parents and the community was phenomenal.
“You just had to ask and things were given, like we didn’t . . . it was work, but it wasn’t overwhelming by any means. And everybody pitched in,” she said.
Margaret Wilton is the co-ordinator for the Easter Seals campaign.
She says Charlottetown Rural’s donation will go a long way to helping reach the $130,000 goal, but they are still looking for more donations.
“We (try) to set a goal we can attain,” says Wilton. “If we get more, that’s awesome.”
Tim Wolfe, the chairman of the campaign, says Brett was amazing to work with.
“He is a very inspirational young man, very talented and we’re so proud that he was able to be our ambassador,” he said.
It seems everyone who comes in contact with Brett feels the same way.
“”He’s a special little man here,” says Hodson.
Danny Murphy of Tim Hortons, the sponsor of the school tour, also spoke to how inspirational Brett is at the Charlottetown Rural assembly.
“To hear Brett, your message, it means so much,” he said. “You’re unbelievable.”
So how did the school manage to raise more than $24,000?
“It was a very natural process,” says Hodson.
“Everybody came together very quickly. We struck a staff committee within the school and we brainstormed some ideas over what we could do, and together, this evolved — the Easter Seal-ebration — the auction and the kitchen party.”
Another initiative, she says, was an in-house competition between the homerooms. Whichever homeroom raised the most money won a pizza party.
Brett is very proud of his school and can’t believe how successful their fundraising efforts were.
“I don’t know how to say . . .” he said again.
“You feel kind of bad for next year’s school,” says Hodson.
“Because we did raise a lot of money, but it’s great, (Easter Seals is) a good initiative and the community was extremely supportive.”
