A woman was trapped by a roof collapse Monday night in the New Dominion area and was taken to the QEH with undetermined injuries.
At 6:34 p.m. the North River fire department received a call about a structure fire and collapse with entrapment. Five trucks and 20 firefighters responded.
Upon arrival they determined there was no fire, but the external roof above a deck had collapsed and a woman had been caught by her leg under the debris.
“There was a husband and wife on the deck. The husband got cleared and he made the call,” said chief of the North River fire department, Kirby Wakelin.
Wakelin said the collapse of the external roof was brought on by excessive ice and snow.
RCMP Sgt. Dwayne Loppie confirmed police were on site to assist the North River fire department and the Island EMS
Wakelin said it took 30 minutes from the time the fire department arrived until the woman was freed.
“We had to decide what we were going to do,” he said. “We had to stabilize the structure.”
