Prince Edward Island licence plate

The Prince Edward Island licence plate has been nominated by collectors as one of the best designed plates in North America.

The Island’s Province House-themed plate was one of 12 new designs in 2013 nominated for the Automobile License Plate Collector’s Association's Best Plate Award. ALPCA is the world’s largest licence plate collectors group.

The P.E.I. plate was the only plate from Canada nominated; the others are from the U.S. and one is from Mexico.

“We are pleased that our new licence plate has been well received, both by Islanders and by licence plate collectors,” Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey said. “One of the criteria for the Best Plate award is legibility, which was the main factor we considered when introducing the new plate to replace our five existing designs.”

Only ALPCA members can vote in the contest through March 4. The winner

will be announced in April in the association’s magazine and on its website, The association has more than 2,600 members in all 50 U.S. states and in 19 countries.

More than 50,000 new plates have been purchased for Island passenger vehicles since going on sale Sept. 20. There are approximately 115,000 vehicles registered in the province.

Islanders can also add an image of a fox, trout, lady’s slipper, Canada goose or blue jay to their plate for an annual fee of $10 that supports wildlife conservation efforts. Motorists have until September to install a new licence plate, which they can purchase for $5 now or when renewing their vehicle registration at an Access P.E.I. site or online at

I thought there was a choice of five or so different plates . You know the one with the animals like the shrunk and raccoon . Collectors association, that's funny. Do they realize there was no need of a new plate, only the governments way of getting 5 plus bucks from us.

This is a very ugly pl.ate and now with the three letters split up, should have left the three numbers together and two letter together. Does look too much an American plate and if you were driving down there, doesn't even say Canada. Wonder who was the genius who designed the plate? I have the fox plate with three letters and like the look of it 100% percent better than the alternative. Can't imagine it would get picked for anything other than to have it redone again!

The only other time a PEI license plate has won an award or even been nominated (it did win) was the 1973 plate. Remember it? ''Prince Edward Island - The place to be in '73.'' With a clownish father of confederation on the left side. Personally, I find every single one of PEI's plate designs absolutely butt ugly.

I heard from the grape vine that the Ontario dealer plate income goes to the queen of England, if that is true then they should stop it. and give that money to all the soup kitchen in Ontario to feed the needy

Birthplace of Confederation---where? You wouldn't know from the plate. Canada can't be found.

Hint: Check out the Maple Leaf. Where's Arkansas? Don't see USA anywhere.

The other contending states, etc also have the right to choose from may license plates which we should have the right to do as well. The Michigan plate is lovely but it's one of many that people have to choose from. The PEI plate is an almost direct copy of the Maryland plate.

How on earth does adding visual clutter to a licence plate make it "better?" The plate is there to allow easy identification of a vehicle, not as a platform for artistic expression. Makes as much sense as allowing personalized colour schemes and decorations on passports.

I like the new plate like the one shown but do not like with the fox, trout or lady slipper etc.. added as I find it makes the plate too crowded looking . I realize purchasing the wildlife images is for a good cause but prefer the look of the plate without added images. Good Luck in the Best Plate Award!!!!!!!!
