SUMMERSIDE — Olympic medalist and Summerside native Heather Moyse will be in store for a big welcome home party when she returns from Russia.
“On behalf of Summerside council and all the citizens of the City of Summerside, I congratulate Heather Moyse on winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals. It is a tremendous accomplishment and we here in her hometown of Summerside could not be more proud,” Mayor Basil Stewart said Thursday.
Moyse and her bobsledding teammate Kaillie Humphries successfully defending their gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on Wednesday.
A city news release says Summerside will be hosting a big welcome home party at Credit Union Place similar to the one held for her after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
“Everyone will be able to congratulate Heather in person,” the release says.
The date for the community celebration is yet to be set, but details will be released as they become available.
“Heather has been an extraordinary ambassador for the City of Summerside, she is the best in the world at what she does and has proven once again that you can come from a small city, have big dreams and big accomplishments .” said Councillor Jim Steele, chair of the City of Summerside’s community services committee.
In the meantime, residents and business owners are encouraged to show their support for Moyse at their businesses and homes throughout the city.
