The home, a wood-shingle structure set back in a wooded area, had children’s toys and a large swing set in the yard.

It is believed one of the occupants had returned to the home which had been empty at the time the fire started, and made the call for assistance.

The highway between Bellevue through to Calendonia  was closed for about three hours as the fire was brought under control. Murray Harbour fire department assisted.

The home was destroyed, said Darren Gormley, deputy fire chief of Murray River department.

Provincial deputy fire marshall Robert Arsenault attended the scene and is carrying out an investigation.

  • I know it's news, but...

I am aware that it's 'your' job to report the news. Having said that, when I had a house fire in PEI The Guardian reported on it before I even know about it (I was out running errands and visiting). My husband who was out of province saw it and thought that our new baby and I might be hurt or even dead. I feel terrible for the occupants.
