Brian Brennan, who was born and raised in Charlottetown, has been named commanding officer for the RCMP’s H Division in Nova Scotia.

It’s a long way from working with the RCMP in Alberton as a student to taking command of the force in Nova Scotia.

But that job in Alberton was the first step in Chief Superintendent Brian Brennan’s long career that will see him take over as commanding officer for the RCMP’s H Division on Feb. 15.

Once he gets his promotion he will become an assistant commissioner.

Brennan said getting the promotion was humbling but he was excited about the opportunity.

“It’s an odd feeling,” he said.

Although he has never served in P.E.I., Brennan was born and raised in Charlottetown before joining the force in 1986.

His career has since spanned three provinces, including a stint with the Saskatoon integrated drug unit and more recently in Nova Scotia where he served as the officer in charge of criminal operations since Jun 2011.

Brennan said taking over as commanding officer wasn’t a job he ever aspired to and throughout his career his goal was always to work on interesting criminal files.

With that came opportunities to get promoted and work with good people, he said.

“I can honestly tell you I never chased a certain rank, but I did chase the work.”

It all started back in 1982 when he worked with the RCMP as a special constable for the summer in Alberton.

During that summer he was exposed to a lot of things that made him grow up, Brennan said.

“It was an absolutely fantastic experience.”

Brennan said he has come a long way from being a UPEI student sitting in class wondering what he was going to do with his life.

“You never know where you’re going to end up when you start off and that’s exactly where I was.”
