Close friend told police he has not seen John Ward since mid-December

Concern continues to grow over the whereabouts and wellbeing of a 60-year-old Charlottetown man missing for weeks.

Charlottetown Police Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan says John Ward was reported missing on Dec. 23 by a close friend.

McGuigan says the friend told police he had not seen Ward for 10 days which "was out of character for Mr. Ward.''

Nothing in the police investigation to date suggests foul play.

Police received an anonymous report from a person who claims to know Ward and believes he saw him at the Shopper's Drug Mart on Queen Street around Dec. 15.

The reported sighting is unconfirmed.

Police are encouraging anyone who may have seen Ward since his disappearance to contact them at 629-4172 or a local police service.

McGuigan says police have had a canine unit out twice searching the shorelines in Charlottetown. Financial institutions used by Ward are also being monitored for possible leads.

Ward has been a mainstay in Charlottetown for 35 years and is well known, notes one friend.

He used to own the Bookman used bookstore in Charlottetown.

Roseanne Stewart, who works at the Bookman and used to work with Ward, says many people are coming in to the store asking about the missing man.

"He had been with the store for like 30 some years,'' she says.

"So a lot of people are concerned.''

"There's no leads - nothing,'' she adds. "It's a mystery.''
