Winter storm, freezing rain to make for messy weekend in Prince Edward Island

Environment Canada has expanded its snowfall and freezing rain warnings for this weekend to include all of Prince Edward Island.

P.E.I. residents may have plenty of time to wrap Christmas presents and drink eggnog by the fireplace this weekend because the forecast is not looking good for getting much else done.

Environment Canada's Weather Office has issued freezing rain and snowfall warnings for Queens, Prince and Kings counties.

An extended period of freezing rain is expected Saturday evening, with Environment Canada warning individuals to monitor conditions and to listen for updated weather statements.

A trough of low pressure over Nova Scotia will slowly move northward to lie over the province this afternoon.

That trough will then drift southward to lie over southwestern Nova Scotia by Sunday morning.

Flurries or showers with a risk of freezing rain will change to freezing rain this evening and then to snow overnight. The snow will continue on Sunday giving 15 to 20 centimetres of accumulation.
