Snow storm sweeping over Prince Edward Island causing widespread cancellations

Guardian business office closes at 10 a.m. today

The snowstorm forecast for Prince Edward Island has caused widespread cancellations across the province.

School is cancelled and the English and French school board are on a system-wide shutdown. Holland College campuses and UPEI are also closed for the day.

All provincial civil service offices are also closed for the day.

P.E.I. provincial court has also closed.

The Guardian's business office will close at 10 a.m. The newsroom continues to be fully staffed, however, with updates to appear online throughout the day.

Environment Canada's Weather Office forecasts heavy and blowing snow today with amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres expected.

A low pressure system currently southwest of Nova Scotia will intensify as it tracks northeastward to lie over Cape Breton early this evening.

Snow ahead of this system will begin over Prince Edward Island early this morning and continue all day before tapering to flurries this evening.

Strong northeasterlies will develop this afternoon creating reduced visibilities in blowing snow. 

A thick layer of freshly fallen snow has already blanketed streets and sidewalks In Halifax, which were still covered in ice from the last storm.

Several flights in and out of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, as well as the Charlottetown Airport have been cancelled or delayed. Maritime Bus reports several of its routes are cancelled or delayed today.

The Northumberland Ferries service has closed for the year between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia, and the Confederation Bridge has issued an advisory that it expects strong winds to cause restrictions later this morning.
