P.E.I. New Democrats are set to elect a new leader and The Guardian and Eastlink TV are once again teaming up to bring the event live to homes across Prince Edward Island.

Anchor Wayne Thibodeau and The Guardian’s team of journalists and commentators will be doing a live television special Saturday, Oct. 13 beginning at 1 p.m.

“We’ll have every angle of the convention covered from the first speech to the final vote is cast,” said Thibodeau, who has anchored live coverage of similar television specials including the Progressive Conservative leadership convention, federal, provincial, and municipal television debates, as well as an annual one-on-one interview with the premier of Prince Edward Island.

“We have brought a team together to examine the NDP factor. Will the party be a player in the next provincial election? Can the next leader of the party reverse the party’s fortunes? Which political party has the most to fear if indeed the NDP is able to maintain or even increase its 18 per cent level of support in the polls?”

Two candidates are vying for the party’s top job.

Mike Redmond of Stratford is director of facilities at the Murphy Community Centre in Charlottetown. He’s also a nationally certified soccer coach and has served as the head coach of the UPEI women’s soccer team since 2004.

This is Redmond’s first foray into politics.

“We see local coverage of political events being important to the residents of Prince Edward Island and Eastlink TV is one again pleased to partner with The Guardian to provide quality in-depth coverage of this event.” - Bruce MacLean, regional manager for Eastlink TV in Prince Edward Island

Trevor Leclerc was an actor and director and drama teacher for 14 years in Ottawa before moving to Prince Edward Island.

In 2000, at the age of 37, Leclerc recovered from a stroke.

Leclerc was the NDP candidates in the 2011 provincial election running against Premier Robert Ghiz in the district of Charlottetown-Brighton. He received 7.5 per cent of the vote.

Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair will be in attendance for the leadership convention in Charlottetown. Mulcair will sit down with Thibodeau for a one-on-one interview during the Oct. 13 television special.

The convention is being held at the Delta Prince Edward hotel in Charlottetown.

Live coverage will be available on Eastlink TV - Channel 10 and in High Definition on Channel 610. It will also be available on Eastlink’s On Demand service following the broadcast.

An encore broadcast of the P.E.I. NDP leadership convention will air Tuesday Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.

Bruce MacLean, regional manager for Eastlink TV in Prince Edward Island, said “We see local coverage of political events being important to the residents of Prince Edward Island and Eastlink TV is one again pleased to partner with The Guardian to provide quality in-depth coverage of this event.”

Time to see real democracy on PEI, not this RED/Blue feeding from the public trough that we have grown to expect from these old line political parties. All the best with the NDP convention and may the best person win. I look forward to helping come next election. i will be coming out - like Mike Redmond - as the time grows near. Lot's of us old Charlottetown Liberal's are moving to the NDP. Watch out in Charlottetown next time...I predict there will not be a liberal elected across our great city!

Conceded that it is important for the media to cover such events, yet one should note that the Food Channel can garner more viewers by offering an exciting recipe for thin gruel, which is pretty much what the Dippers have on offer.

Island legislature must begin playing by rule of law
    - October 8, 2012 at 15:05:43

Our two party system has ballyhooed both parties and the electorate accepting that a majority in the legislature enables you to thumb your nose at Constitutional Law. Parties have taken turns and waited patiently for their turn to get at the trough and hire friends while spending additional borrowed funds. The best effort of the NDP should be entirely focused on request for a ruling from the speaker; if in fact the Ghiz team can deny answers and shroud deals in secrecy thinly veiled by privacy policy. The Constitution as Speaker Milliken ruled; assures that any elected official must have full and complete answers provided to any question posed, unredacted. None of the local hayseeds practicing law know much about Constitutional law and Olive gets crappy advice and knives in her back from her legal team. If the NDP win one seat and apply the law, we can begin to see answers. Majority is not Dictatorship with Immunity Mr. Ghiz, you will indeed account to a judge. thanks eh

I agree with you completely. If the NDP win one seat and apply the law, we can begin to see answers. Majority is not Dictatorship with Immunity Mr. Ghiz, you will indeed account to a judge.

Are they actually going to debate at some point? They pretended to have a debate recently but it was actually just an "Organized Agreement Time" where they sat around agreeing with each other. If they don't have any ideas to debate with each other Islanders can only conclude that it's because neither one of them has any ideas at all. I haven't heard a single policy out of either one of these folks. We've heard platitudes, complaints, and expressions for change. So what would you change? How would you change it? Where would you get the money? What would you do about the deficit? What would you do about the lack of opportunities for people under 40? Say something or go home. I'm tired of hearing these dippers say "Oh well we're not Liberals and we're not PCs." Fine. You're different. Now explain how you're different. What does it mean when you say an NDP government would be just like members of our family? Aside from the fact that it sounds extremely creepy, imprecise, and unconstitutional, what does it mean to you? Because to PEI it means you're a party without ideas but overloaded with empty socialist rhetoric about how nature is beautiful but we should all live unnaturally close to Big Bankrupt Bureaucracy. Man up. Grow an idea. Stop growing pot.

Ohhh Boyyyyyyyy - How juvenile can you get? You sound like a 6 year old child. All great things start out small. Remember the little snowball you kicked down the hill that ended doing much more than you expected?

I do enjoy how Liberal and Conservative hacks feel the need to take shots at the rising NDP and to suggest that both the old parties are not corrupt, backward, arrogant and destructive, and do not really need and richly deserve to be driven from power. All of the above descriptions are now proven by both federal Con and provincial Lib actions at this point in history. That point is self evident. There is no need to make lists. It is simply the truth.

Way to go PEI NDP. We need a third choice more than ever. Both the Liberals and the Conservatives have never been more destructive. The Tories have had to admit their foolishness on EI reforms but they have not pulled back on cutting pensions. The Liberals are out of control on PEI, the HST, Plan B and loads of new fees. All at the same time. That is bordering on sick actually. Let's see some NDP MLAs and MPs. Soon. PEI needs change. More than ever.
