Traffic along Riverside Drive in Charlottetown was horrendous Monday as work continues on the two roundabouts for that stretch of road. Street construction, paving and other work is playing havoc with traffic flow within the city. Streets that don't normally have heavy traffic are now being used by motorists due to closures and waits because of the construction. North River Road between Brighton Road and McGill Avenue is closed at certain times of the day for paving and that means streets such as Ambrose and Greenfield Avenue are seeing an increase in traffic flow.

Its good to see that there is so many construction experts that read this website. Let people get on with their jobs. If the construction wasn't going on people would be complaining about the state of the roads and unemployment!

I agree with you Chad, too many people spend all their time complaining about insignificant matters and/or matters that have nothing to do with them. Live and let live.

LOL DONT FORGET TODAY CONVENTION CENTRE
    - July 20th, 2010 at 12:42:49

Yah, North river road, belvedere, university, riverside, one of the funniest is Esher Street its been half paved for longer than a week with manhole land mines. The road of death Skyview omg you could right the suspension off a 1/2 ton truck. I'm probably missing some roads but don't forget the convention center. Oh and more people who say the round about improve traffic flow, well its been several times now that traffic has been backed up from the roundabout to university.

Roundabout Ronny needs to put the Tax payers money back in to the roads not in to roundabouts that are not needed !!! We need a change !! and i am not talking about roundabouts

Cory - what changes do you suggest? It seems as if people do not like change on this island. I am all for the roundabouts, they spped up traffic flow. Once they are in operation people will realise that they are required.

all it takes is a little common sense. stagger the work over a couple of years. why do they need to embark on two major projects at the same time?

It's nice to know that these delays are caused by repairs that were clearly and urgently needed.

My question is why not wait until sept/oct/nov to do the construction?

Every city in the world has construction work going on, I'm sure tourists are not put off by it. I was downtown yesterday and it didn't bother me at all.

Too much road construction going on all at once is creating some of the worst traffic congestion I've seen in years. Someone didn't do their homework. Hopefully when it's all over, the improvements will speak for themselves but it's going to be one long summer for commuting.

i agree! tourists would not want to see this or even come back to this! it's horrible, I attempt to avoid it at all costs, university avenue was bad in the first place, now it's just beyond that.

I drove on Riverside Drive today and it was TERRIBLE!! It is one thing to have the road(s) in "construction shape", but there is absolutely no organization to the flow of traffic. There was one flagger in place at the intersection of Exhibition Drive and Riverside Drive trying to control 4 lanes of traffic. There should be street closures put into place, when big construction jobs are being completed. There is no reason why the flow of traffic on Exhibition Drive (for example) cannot be closed for gaining access to Riverside Drive. I wouldn't want to be a flagger, with the responsibility of controlling heavy trucks, to small cars, when no one knows where exactly their "side" of the road is. Also, tips to speed up the process should be located.....right now, 3 major city access roads are destroyed, University Avenue, Belvedere Aveue, and Riverside Drive.........these projects should be on a sensitive timeline.....

The construction happening all over this city is ridiculously sloppy work causing disgust and frustration among everyone that I have spoken with since university avenue began to be demolished a few months ago. Pu yourself into the shoes of a tourist who is visiting our beautiful capital for the first time. Would you return? If you were to visit every other province in Canada, you would be hard pressed to find jobsites that are as sloppy, unorganized, and unkempt, not to mention terribly slow. Another proper use of our taxes.

I Agree with DISAPPOINTED. The rate at which construction is being done it ridiculous. The University Ave project should have been completed a long time ago as that was started last year. I think alot of it has to do with Island Coastal Construction having multiple major projects going on simultanously. Along with the University Ave reconstruction and the one by the hospital, they are also doing the construction for the UPEI roundabout and the widening of the highway in Stratford. And Im sure they have other projects as well in other areas of PEI. Niice to know that Island Coastal has recieved 90% of the major projects in PEI this year eh?

I agree with Disappointed. I have been through lots of road construction over the years but I do not know why the roads are so bad right in the construction zone.. you practically need a truck to escape the bumps and lumps.... I have never seen anything like it.. the shape the temporary areas are in. And why do they need two roundabouts down there? I hear someone mention on the news that it was too dangerous to work at night but they did it in other provinces... so it can't be that dangerous. 24 hours a day, scrape the dang road and get this done with.
