The Prince Edward Island National Park has launched two self-guided geocaching programs, GPS Heritage Quest and Cyclocache.
Through these high-tech scavenger hunts, visitors have the opportunity to navigate P.E.I. National Park and surrounding areas using a GPS (global positioning system) while travelling by bicycle or by car to uncover hidden clues about the places, people and events that define Prince Edward Island.
Upon completion of the program, visitors will be awarded a Parks Canada GeoCoin.
The GPS Heritage Quest program is completed by vehicle and is available in both the Brackley and Cavendish sectors of the P.E.I. National Park.
Each section takes approximately two hours to complete.
The Cyclocache program is completed by bicycle and departs from Dalvay-by-the-Sea.
Visitors have the option of participating in 1.5-, three- or five-hour self-guided programs that loop Dalvay, Stanhope and Brackley.
Bike rentals are available at Dalvay-by-the-Sea for $9 an hour.
GPS rentals are available at both Dalvay-by-the-Sea and the Cavendish Discovery Center and cost between $12 and $20 to rent.
Please note that a deposit of $100 is required for GPS rentals.
In addition, Parks Canada is set to release traditional geocaches in Prince Edward Island National Park.
These caches will be publicly listed on geocaching.com.
New and experienced cachers are invited to take part in this challenging activity
that is fun for the entire family.
