Confederation Landing Park is closed to the public for the next three weeks to make way for two of the biggest entertainment extravaganzas Charlottetown has seen in some time.
Charlottetown Summerfest, formerly known as the Festival of Lights, and Live with Regis and Kelly promise to keep things hopping on the waterfront in July.
Crews have been busy for days setting up for Summerfest (June 30-July 4), which features world famous Cirque du Soleil as the headline attraction.
Summerfest doesn't get underway until Wednesday but the setup for Cirque is considered quite elaborate and time consuming.
Once Summerfest wraps up, the site stays closed because Regis and Kelly will need the site from July 12-15. By the time Summerfest tears down, it will be time to start preparations for the second-most popular daytime TV show.
"The site itself is shut down approximately a week earlier than it typically would and the footprint at the site of the shutdown is much larger, obviously, for a number of reasons,' Wayne Long, events developer officer for the City of Charlottetown, said Thursday in regards to Confederation Landing Park.
Long said the site has also been closed to the public for safety and security reasons.
"Right now on site there's tents going up here, there are trailers going there, there's power lines running this way and that way. It's for the safety of everyone. There's vehicles driving around and golf carts moving around and equipment moving.'
Long said he realizes shutting the park down isn't going to sit well with a lot of people.
"There's many inconveniences that are involved in hosting large events. Events this large, logistically, they just can't be done overnight or in 24 hours.'
Confederation Landing Park has been fenced off from the south side of the parking lot to the water. There's no room for people to use the boardwalk.
"We would certainly like to thank the public for their patience and we would encourage them to use some of our other scenic parks and many walking trails throughout the city.'
Long said, ultimately, this is a chance for city residents to see the kinds of programming normally not seen on P.E.I.

Joe, no, taxpayers are not subsidizing those who will be in attendance. Tickets are free. What the money is going towards, and what taxpayers are subsidizing, is the exposure this show will supposedly bring for Island tourism.

    - construction on both sides of the university
    - west river bridge closing for the summer (cuts off 2 major golf courses)
    - grafton st tunnel closure
    - roundabout construction
    - confed landing park closed
yet we still have majorly inadequate road signage for downtown, lack of proper road painting (lines and crosswalks), short on parking. I really forget what this city looks like without snow or construction everywhere. Its all so excessive, yet I havent seen anyone working on uni ave in a week, with only 1.5 lanes and some horrible bumps. Please stop wasting our time and money.

I read these comments to see how many small minded people will just complain about anything. It's really hard to have the desire to do anything to promote our city when a bunch of losers that think everything should be free complain. Check out normal cirque tickets. $130 or so dollars. There are lots of things I can't afford to do, but I shut up and don't do them. I don't whine to the world that it is not fair. Grow up.

How pathetic, that instead of letting the Island be what it is, beautiful unto itself, that some find it necessary to turn it into some sort of tawdry Vegas North.

So we loose a $1m on our taxpayers money to ship regis & kelly here and who knows how much for the circus which the tickets are way out of budget for the average island family. NOW we loose the park too that the taxpayers money pays for????

Wow..! Any other ways PEI can screw over the taxpayers??

The people whining about the whiners seem to forget that these events are being subsidized by public money and are being held on public property.
In other words, PEI taxpayers who will not be attending, for whatever reason, are still subsidizing those who do choose to attend.
    Public comments should be expected.
If the next big tourism idea from the powers- that-be doesn't involve any taxpayer subsidies (unlikely but technically possible),
the whining about whining will have some merit.

Dear average Joe Islander taxayor - YOU are the last thing on this government 's mind and the very least concern of the Land-Developer businessmen that have moved onto-into, your province and who have taken over your downtown core area-including Confed Landing.

Got news for you HUH fr. pei, this, This is what NOT what brings people to PEI as tourists.

If I wanted to see Regis and Kelly, I'd fly to New York in October/November and check out a Play on Broadway and do some shopping while there.

July - September we travel to PEI for it's Beaches, Lobster Suppers, the Confederation Cnter plays & downtown shopping, and to experience PEI's antiquated, quiet country atmosphere and laidback downtown lifestle.

Dec.-May we go to Florida to get away from Canada's ungodly winter weather.

Who watches T.V in July? A July Broadcast of any TV program isn't going to have much of a reach-much of an audience.

This has been posted so often...but people like Anton continue to miss the point. The goal is not to attract people to come see Regis while he is here. The goal is to promote the Island to the people who watch this show. And according to the ratings data, there are lots who watch..even in july.

Joe, no, taxpayers are not subsidizing those who will be in attendance. Tickets are free. What the money is going towards, and what taxpayers are subsidizing, is the exposure this show will supposedly bring for Island tourism.

This is outragious every time you turn around, the park is closed for some function.Tourist come to the city to enjoy our parks,it looks like a mini summit 20 meeting down there.I'll send the tourists out to the new rotary, its one of the nicest attractions we have in the city now that the park is shut down.
