Lead trainer Shakta Kaur is excited about returning to Prince Edward Island this fall to give a Kundalini yoga teacher training course. The sessions will take place at Centre Goeland in Cape Egmont from Oct. 13-26. The event is hosted by Health Within Holistic Centre, Charlottetown.

Shakta Kaur returns to this province to give Kundalini yoga teacher training at Centre Goeland, Cape Egmont, Oct. 13-26

When Shakta Kaur heard about a workshop called Meditation as Medicine by Dharma Singh Khalsa several years ago, she decided to skip it.

The Chicago businesswoman had been investing in her personal growth and development, but just couldn’t stand the idea of spending another weekend indoors.

So, as a distraction, she dropped into Borders Bookstore and Café, in the same city, to redeem a coupon for a free latte. But, as life would have it, all the seats were taken.

So, she took the hot drink to the back of the room to browse the book display.

“As I wandered the stacks, I come around the corner of a book shelf and a book literally falls off the book shelf, hits me on the head and hits the floor.”

When she turned it over and read the title, Meditation Is Medicine: Activating the Power of Your Natural Healing Force by Dharma Singh Khalsa, she started to laugh.

“I said, ‘OK, God, I guess I’m going to that workshop after all,” says Kaur, with a laugh, as she tells the story during her recent visit to Charlottetown.

As it turned out, Khalsa, a medical doctor, was teaching Kundalini yoga and meditation that weekend. And, although Kaur had studied yoga, this was not the same at all.

Instead of the different poses, it focused on meditation, breathing techniques and chanting as well as simple movements.

“I had been trying different things. But when I took that class from him, I thought, ‘this is it.’ So I began to study it,” says the international Kundalini yoga teacher who gave workshops on P.E.I. last month and will return in the fall as the lead trainer at the Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at Centre Goeland in Cape Egmont.

Hosted by Health Within Holistic Centre, Charlottetown, the 220-hour course will be taught in two 12-day sessions. The first session is Oct. 13-26 and the second is April 23 to May 6, 2015.

Ruth Richmond, who attended Kaur’s teacher training program and teaches Kundalini yoga in Charlottetown, is impressed with her teaching methods.

“Shakta is a great teacher. She is inspiriting and warm, funny and beautiful. She lives the Kundalini lifestyle which means she is always in white even (during) her off times. She also wears a turban.

“Wearing white expands the magnetic field around a person. Try it. People smile and give you compliments when you wear white. And a turban or any head covering helps the mind focus for meditation,” she says.

Rachel Leslie, who teaches at Fortune Bridge Yoga Studio, also attended the session.

“It is very liberating and personal. It makes you feel clear-headed, light and relaxed.

“The biggest thing, you feel less stress, so it really reduces the body of accumulative stress,” she says.

Richmond, already a certified teacher in three other styles of yoga, is looking forward to learning more from Kaur.

“Kundalini yoga is the fastest acting yoga. I love it. The physical actions are not what we think of when we think of yoga postures. They get put together into kriyas, sets of action that have a specific effect, such as a kriya for depression or kriya for a light heart. There’s even one called Let the Liver Live kriya.

“It makes you feel great — first because you actually completed what was asked (of you) and then the after effects, as it works on a cell level.”

This 220 hour yoga course is marketed by the students of a dead Indian businessman who called himself Yogi Bhajan. It's not inexpensive and has been compared to a multi-level marketing course by Yogi Bhajan's critics -- of which there are many -- both locally and abroad.
