Murphy’s promotion supports lobster industry

People with an affinity for lobster will be able to enjoy it this month, while also supporting the Island’s lobster industry.

For its second consecutive year, the Murphy Group of Restaurants has launched the promotion, “I Love Lobsterfest.”

For every lobster purchased during the month of May, $1 will be donated to the marketing levy endorsed at the Canadian Lobster Value Recovery Summit.

The levy was passed in March and it will support the creation of a marketing plan to promote Canadian lobster as a premium product around the world and the development of new markets, stated a release.

The four participating Murphy restaurants in Charlottetown are Sims Corner, The Gahan House, The Brickhouse, and The Merchantman.

Vanessa Smith is the marketing manager with the Murphy Group of Restaurants, and said the four locations are offering lobster inspired menus consisting of an appetizer, sandwich, Mac n Cheese, and an entrée.

Smith said the lobster industry had a difficult year last year with their low prices.

“We wanted to show our support and show we’re behind them.”

She said it’s all about supply and demand and thinks the promotion will assist the local fishermen.

The I Love Lobsterfest promotion was started in 2013, so it was something new, she said.

“Last year we sold 1,000 pounds worth of lobster.”

This year they have a goal of selling 1,500 pounds.

“It’s already started off really great. We’ve had some positive feedback.”

Murphy Group of Restaurants president, Kevin Murphy, said it’s important to show support for the local fishermen.

“We decided to do this donation this year to really show that we are behind our fishermen. They had a tough year last year. We have some of the best seafood product in the world and we are just trying to do our part in promoting it.”
