Today's Red Friday is tinged with a greater sadness. As the piper plays a lament in Kandahar another Canadian is on his way home for a final journey along The Highway of Heroes.
Canadian and international soldiers gathered at Kandahar Airfield in the late afternoon sun Thursday to bid farewell to Lt. Justin Boyes. The 26-year-old Boyes was killed by an improvised explosive device blast early Wednesday morning in Afghanistan's Panjwaii district.
More than 2,500 troops lined the tarmac as Boyes's casket was carried aboard a military transport plane bound for a return flight home to Canadian soil.
Boyes belonged to the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry based in Edmonton and was 10 days into his second deployment to Afghanistan when he was killed.
Lt. J. Boyes praised for 'calm, motivated nature' a proud Canadian Soldier may he RIP.
The sudicide attack on the UN Mission in Kandahar also wounded another Canadian as of yet not named. May his/her recovery be speedy and complete.
