DND Please Pay Attention

Another day, another loss for Canada, this time in ISAF Camp in Kabul. Thoughts and prayers to family and friends of this young soldier.

This letter is added to this blog as a wake up call to the powers that be.

Reader Comments: I have done research for articles about our new veterans of the 21 century and things are not good for those who are returning with physical and mental problems. Those coming back with injuries and mental problems are not being treated with the same attitude as they were when they were recruited and signed up on the dotted line. It appears government departments and the military are trying their best to do as little as they can to pay for the expenses for treatment and support for returning vets and their dependents. The recent photo ops with injuried troops and the new defense Minister are just an attempt to satisfy the media and activitists working for the benefit of the vets. Behind the scenes there are apparently major problems with provision of adequate healthcare services, pensions and other benefits. I my opinion there has been too much thought put on the dead combattants and not enough on those living having to fight battles with officials and bureaucrats in order to provide a life of a reasonable standard for themselves and their families. We all know how many have been killed but can anyone tell me how many have been injuried to the point where they cannot no longer serve with their original units as a result of sustained injuries or how many have been wounded and returned to the units? We need more support for the living.

As we await the investigation of yet another young Canadian shot in Kabul, be it suicide or murder. This will be revealed by the investigation. Nevertheless it is again a sad loss for family, friends and for Canada to lose another young life.

Here on the Island we are fortunate enough to have RCMP who are very good at caring for the returnees. They understand that incidents that have occurred with recent returnees, have a deeper cause other than alcohol and anger. Some of our men and women have seen and lived with scenes of life and warfare that the vast majority of Canadians, will never experience.

Please remember to WEAR RED ON FRIDAY ! ! ! !

The information that I had accumulated on this in my travels is this as of April this year 260 had been injured. There have been more since. Currently serving there were 17 amputees of which I am one. As for the care the people received it has been met with varying degrees of success. Even the military's main focus person, Paul Franklin has had (having) challenges trying to get covered some of his extensive rehab requirements. I was one in that picture with Gordie O'Connor. I almost stab him in the foot with my sledge hockey stick. Which is funny cause there is pics in the bottom of them. The medical policies that are in place in my opinion are antiquated and reactive not proactive. This unfortunately falls in line with the civilian side. Health Care in Canada is buyer be ware. The admin process is all member and unit dependant. There is enough play for it to go either way after they have brought you back to (as far as they can take you) heatlh. Claims are still backing up at DVA. It is a dogs breakfast. I concur one hundred percent it needs to get better in a hurry.
