Great News... Royal title to be returned to Canada's military

HM our Queen rain or shine

Direct from our Nations News Source the CBC:

A royal name change for Canada's navy and air force will be announced Tuesday, and the army will also be renamed, in a move that taps Canada's military heritage.

The Maritime Command and Air Command will again be known as the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force, while the Land Force Command will be renamed the Canadian Army.

The name changes will be officially announced Tuesday by Defence Minister Peter MacKay, and events marking the transition are scheduled to take place simultaneously across the country.

According to a Canadian Forces document obtained by CBC News on Monday, the move restores the historic names of the three branches of the Forces, and the initiative is being billed as "an important and recognizable part of Canada's military heritage."

"These were the services that fought and emerged victorious from the Second World War and Korea and contributed to the defence of Europe and North America from the early days of the Cold War. These were also the services that paved the way in terms of international peacekeeping missions," says the note, which appears to have been sent to Canadian Forces members.

The branches were renamed in 1968 when they were unified under one central command named the Canadian Armed Forces. That unified command is expected to remain in place when the old names are restored.

The naming of the units has raised some debate in recent years. A group of veterans has been pushing the federal government to go back to the pre-1968 designations for the navy and air force and launched a petition calling on it to "restore the royal honour."

But not everyone supports the renaming. The NDP's defence critic Jack Harris says the move is "unnecessary" and "divisive." He told CBC News in an interview Monday that Canadians have pride in their military institutions because they are Canadian, not because of their attachment to the monarchy.

I for one am absolutely in favour of this long awaited move. I can understand why the RCN and the RCAF will regain their moniker and the Army will not. The Army is a large body of separate untits, corps and Regiments. Who knows perhaps in time we will hae the RoyalCanadian Logistical Corps or the Royal Canadian Engineers. But first things first the RCN and the RCAF deserve the return of the Royal Title.

Never mind the NDP naysayers Jack Harris says the move is unneccesary and divisive.

This is in fact the exact opposite, our men and women will once again have "Esprit de Corps" a long line of military History is behind this.

If you remember that old pacifist Liberal PM Pierre Trudeau, combined the three services and they lost their Uniforms. Then it took 2 Conservative Prime Ministers to give back our history. first PM Brian Mulroney gave us back our uniforms, Then Stephen Harper re energised the miltary with much needed  equipment, and now he and his excellent Minister of Defence Peter MacKay, will return the Title with the blessings of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth,

Canada Salute our members of The RCN and the RCAF>

I'm a retired Vet that is proud of his service to the Canadian Forces.Don't like being grouped with the royals. There was nothing wrong with the name change before. This seems like a political move to me.As far as the political bashing from Rob well that's Rob(true blue). There was no Royal during my service and I for one will always address it as the CF.Enjoy the name change!

Your Nom de Plume says it all. You as a Canadian and a Veteran do not have to agree. THis is your right as protected by the men and women of the CF or the RCN, RCAF, Canada is a proud nation with strong ties to the monarchy. Even as the CF you took an oath of allegience to your Queen. In the cbc Poll 12000 pollsters 63 % agree with the change back to Royal 3& were undecided and the remaining 34& are of the opinion you voice. You are absolutely correct I am True Blue, a True Monarchist and a True Canuck Thanks for your readership and your comment.
