Earlier this spring, when it became evident that we would be social distancing and self-isolating for a while, I received a note from Angela Nic.

Angela’s aunt Nettie was in a nursing home in Port Elgin, New Brunswick. Her 102nd birthday was coming up and she was missing her family and friends. Her niece was convinced that if a few people mailed in birthday cards, it would brighten her aunt Nettie’s special day.
I put out the call and you responded. Mrs. Nettie Wells received a staggering 481 birthday cards from across the region. I didn’t know any of this until late last week when I got a call from Karen Coffin, an employee of the long-term care facility. Karen called because Nettie was beside herself trying to figure out how she could thank the people who showed so much kindness to a complete stranger. She was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love.
So that’s what I’m doing today, reaching out to you, to thank you on Nettie’s behalf. It’s quite easy to fire off an email or post a line on Facebook, but the fact that you took time to write notes in cards and mail them is heartwarming.
Right now, there are many, many things that we are told we “can’t do.” But we can still bring joy and happiness to people around us, even strangers.
If you have some time, dig through that drawer with the blank cards and stationery. Write an encouraging message to someone you haven’t seen in a while. I know a lot of people, especially seniors, love to get mail. It’ll only take a minute or two, but I’m willing to bet it will put a smile on someone’s face.
When you are connected to a group and feel responsible for other people, that sense of purpose and meaning encourages you to take better care of yourself and take fewer risks. Let’s stay connected and keep the conversation going.
