Hit with an unexpected snow day and suddenly tasked with entertaining your little ones all day? Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Here are a couple of snow day crafts you can pull off with supplies you probably already have around the house!

Snow Paint

Every child is an artist - let them explore their creativity with this non-toxic snow paint. You’re probably tired of looking at all of the snow piling up, why not let the kids jazz it up with fun colours while getting some fresh air?

You’ll need:

  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • A squeeze bottle or a container and paint brush
  • Cornstarch (optional)

Instructions:

Combine the water and food colouring of your choice. If you prefer a more liquid paint, leave it at this. If you’d like a thicker paint, add cornstarch until cloudy.

Pour your mixture into squeeze bottles or jars that can be taken outside and let your imagination run wild. Create frames using twigs and rocks or use the entire surface to create your masterpiece.

Suddenly, the snow banks you hated to see will make you smile every time you catch a glimpse.

Snow Storm in a Jar

Are your kids more interested in the science side of things? Not to worry, here’s how you can create a snow storm in a jar to thrill your weather-loving little ones.

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 2.5 cups of baby oil
  • Glitter (silver, white, blue)
  • 1 tablet of alka seltzer
  • 3 tablespoons of white paint
  • Blue food colouring (optional)
  • Mason jar
  • Stir stick or spoon

Instructions:

Fill your jar about three quarters of the way with baby oil.

In a small bowl, combine your water with a few tablespoons of white paint. Add your glitter and food colouring to the jar. Now it’s time to get creative! Add as much or as little extras as you’d like, depending on how intense you want your storm to be.

Carefully top off the jar with the water and paint mixture.

Drop your alka seltzer tablet into the jar, take a step back and watch the glittery snow storm develop before your eyes.

Being trapped inside all day with nothing to do is no fun, so we hope these activities bring a little entertainment to your next snow day! Your kids will thank you for creating fun memories and you won’t have to listen to an unending chorus of “I’m bored.”
