Look what flew into North Kingston in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley late last month – a cattle egret!
Donna Shunamon says the beautiful bird landed on their lawn and stayed several hours – feeding on some worms.
I have never seen one in person, but, several years ago, mom snapped a photo of a cattle egret riding on the back of one of our cows.
Cattle egrets follow grazing cows and eat the flies and bugs that tend to bother the cows.
The movement of foraging livestock also dislodges insects from the field, which cattle egrets feed on. These two share a symbiotic relationship – mutually beneficial!
