ELMSDALE – Ten boys and eight girls’ teams will take part in this weekend’s 35th annual Wolverine Volleyball Classic.

The boys’ matches will take place at the Westisle gymnasium in Elmsdale, and the girls’ teams will be in action at M.E. Callaghan Intermediate School in Profit’s Corner.
Kelly Herget, coach of the Westisle senior AAA girls, is treating the tournament as an opportunity for her team to get on a winning track. Despite some solid efforts, the team is still looking for its first victory after seven league matches.
With seven returning players, the Wolverines are comprised of five Grade 12s, three Grade 11s and two Grade 10s.
“We’re steadily improving,” said Herget, who noted Westisle had a strong showing in last year’s Wolverine Classic – a second-place finish.
They enter the tournament as Westisle Team One, and will play in the Blue Pool. They get the tournament started on Friday at 3 p.m., with a match that doubles as a P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior AAA Girls Volleyball League match against Colonel Gray.
The Westisle senior A girls are also in the tournament, and will compete in the Gold Pool as Westisle Team Two.
“It will definitely be a great experience for the girls to play the top teams,” said co-coach Katie Rayner referring to a team made up of one Grade 12 student, two Grade 11s and six Grade 10s. “We haven’t won a game yet, but we’re right there in every game.”
They open Gold Pool play against Three Oaks on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Boys
Like their AAA girls’ counterparts, the Westisle senior AAA boys will start Blue Pool play on Friday at 3 p.m. The Wolverines will play a best-of-five tournament game that also doubles as a league match against the Colonel Gray Colonels.
As all other matches in the tournament are best-of-three, the boys’ Gold Pool action only gets going at 3:30 p.m., with a match between Three Oaks and Charlottetown Rural.
Westisle coach Keturah Fraser described her Wolverines as a young team, but indicated they are playing well. There are four Grade 12 students, one Grade 11 and seven Grade 10s sharing court time.
