CHARLOTTETOWN – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers are off to a winning start in the 2018 Island Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Ryan McKenna recorded three points to lead the Vipers to a 5-3 road win over the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros in Game 1 of the best-of-seven semifinal series. The series resumes with Game 2 on Sunday at Credit Union Centre in Kensington, formerly Community Gardens, at 7 p.m.
Jacob Stewart’s goal with 7:57 remaining in the third period broke a 3-3 tie, and stood up as the game-winner. McKenna, who also added two assists, sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds showing on the ice. Riley Gallant (1-1), Campbell Gallant and CJ McCardle also dented the twine for the Vipers.

Tanner Lund (2) and Nick Currie replied for the Metros.
Sherwood-Parkdale was ahead 2-1 after the opening period, but the Vipers took a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.
Rett Rook earned the goaltending win over Sam Walsh. The final shots-on-goal totals were 42-38 in favour of the Vipers.
The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings and Eastern Maniacs opened the other semifinal series in Souris on Friday night as well. The result of that game was unavailable at deadline time.
