SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers continued their hot play in 2019 on Wednesday night.
Logan Vandervelden scored 1:07 into overtime to lift the Vipers to a 6-5 road victory over the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros in a likely preview of a first-round playoff series.
The second-place Vipers, who sit at 22-8-0 (won-lost-overtime losses), have won four games in a row and 11 of 12 since the calendar turned to 2019. The Metros, who are comfortably in third place, are 12-14-3.
Offensive leaders
At the Cody Banks Arena in Charlottetown, CJ McCardle scored a hat trick while Vandervelden added three assists for a four-point night. Dylan Wheatley (1-1) and Parker Ronahan also scored for Kensington, which will host the Don Johnson Memorial Cup Atlantic junior B hockey championship tournament in late April.
Tanner Lund (2-1), Taylor Runighan (1-2), Jacob Stewart and Drew Bowman answered for the Metros.
The teams were tied 2-2 after one period, and 3-3 at the end of 40 minutes.
Overall, Kensington outshot the Metros 34-29. Caleb Coyle earned the goaltending win over Ben Parent.
The two teams will close out a home-and-home series at Credit Union Centre in Kensington on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
