UPEI women’s hoops team defeats Huskies in first of two weekend games

Saint Mary's takes men's game while St. FX defeats men's hockey Panthers in Antigonish, N.S.

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Fifth-year forward Kiera Rigby scored 26 points to lead the UPEI Panthers to a 68-64 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies Friday in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball action.

Karla Yepez added 14 points off the bench while Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 12 rebounds and nine points and Carolina Del Santo hauled in 10 rebounds.

Katrina Murrell had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies while Jasmine Cain scored 15 points. Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse had nine points and nine rebounds while Cornwall native Jada Yeo had seven points and four rebounds.

The Huskies led 25-23 after the first quarter but trailed 38-33 at the halftime after being outscored 15-8 in the second quarter. The Panthers took a 55-52 led to the fourth quarter.

The Panthers improved to 4-5 while the Huskies fall to 5-4. The teams meet again today at 6 p.m.

Men basketball

The Huskies men pulled away in the third quarter of a close game en route to an 86-68 victory over the Panthers.

The Huskies led 23-21 after the first quarter and 42-41 at the half.

The Panthers went 4-for-16 from the field, including 2-for-10 from beyond the arc, in the third quarter. During that 10-minute stretch the Huskies hit 11 of their 19 shots (58 per cent) and didn’t let the Panthers back into the game.

Kemar Alleyne had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds to lead the Huskies while Nico Brauner added 19 points and Brent Martindale chipped in 16.

Point guard Amin Suleman had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block to pace the Panthers attack. Milorad Sedlarevic scored 11 and Samy Mohamed added 12 off the bench while D’Adrian Allen had 11 rebounds.

The Huskies improved to 6-4 while the Panthers fall to 0-9. The teams play tonight at 8 p.m.

Men’s hockey

Matt Needham had two goals and an assist and Bryson Cianfrone set up three goals in the St. FX X-Men’s 5-2 victory over the Panthers in men’s hockey.

Cody Hendsbee and Mark Tremaine each had a goal and an assist for the host X-Men in Antigonish, N.S.

Cole MacDonald also scored in the victory while Anthony Difruscia, Holden Cook, Brent Turnbull and Michael Clarke picked up helpers.

Beau McCue and Gabe Guertler scored for the Panthers with Marcus Power drawing assists on both goals and singles going to Beni Berisha and Ryan MacKinnon.

Brandon Hope made 32 saves for the win while Matthew Mancina stopped 38 shots in the loss.

The game was scoreless after the first period while St. FX led 3-1 going to the third. St. FX went 2-for-8 on the power play while UPEI was 1-for-6.

St. FX improved to 17-1-3 while UPEI falls to 5-15-1. The Panthers play the Dalhousie Tigers (3-17-1) tonight at 7 p.m. in Halifax.
