Robbie Gould kicked three field goals and the San Francisco 49ers remained undefeated by posting a 9-0 victory over the host Washington Redskins on Sunday in heavy rain and wind at Landover, Md.
San Francisco relied on its sturdy defense on a day featuring treacherous field conditions and allowed just 154 yards while starting 6-0 for the first time since the Joe Montana-led 49ers won their first 10 games in 1990. Julian Taylor recovered a fumble and made an important fourth-down stop for the Niners.
Jimmy Garoppolo completed 12 of 21 passes for 151 yards and one interception to improve to 12-2 as a starter during his tenure with the 49ers. Kendrick Bourne had three receptions for 69 yards as San Francisco totaled 283 yards offense.
Adrian Peterson rushed for 81 yards on 20 carries but lost a key fumble for Washington (1-6). Case Keenum completed 9 of 12 passes for 75 yards.
The game was scoreless for more than 39 minutes before San Francisco moved 67 yards on eight plays to set up Gould's 28-yard field goal with 5:28 left in the third quarter.
The key play was a 40-yard catch-and-run from Garoppolo to Richie James Jr. that moved the ball to the Washington 30-yard line. When the drive stalled, Gould had no issues booting the ball between the uprights despite the poor conditions.
Peterson lost a fumble on the Redskins' next drive as Kwon Alexander dislodged the ball and Taylor recovered it at the 49ers' 41 with 1:20 remaining in the third period.
San Francisco responded by working 7:17 off the clock en route to another field goal. The key play was Garoppolo's 26-yard pass to Bourne that moved the ball to the Washington 7. A short time later, Gould connected from 22 yards to make it 6-0 with 9:03 remaining.
The 49ers put away the game with Gould's 29-yard field goal with 23 seconds left. It capped an 11-play, 56-yard drive.
San Francisco had just 68 yards -- five passing -- during a scoreless first half in which Washington posted 82 of its 118 yards on the ground.
Peterson rushed for 49 yards on eight carries on the game's first possession, which lasted 8:14. But the Redskins came up empty when Dustin Hopkins was wide right on a 39-yard field goal.
San Francisco had a chance to get on the board with 10:56 left in the second quarter but Gould's 45-yard field-goal attempt was wide left.
Washington threatened later in the quarter and passed on a field-goal try with just more than four minutes left. Peterson got the call on fourth-and-1 from the 49ers' 28 but was dropped by Taylor in the backfield for a 1-yard loss.
