GUELPH, Ont. – Two wrestlers from Summerside won medals at the Canada Cup wrestling competition on Saturday.
Hannah Taylor won a silver medal in the 57-kilogram female category, and Ligrit Sadiku earned bronze in the 61-kilogram male competition.
The event, which was held at the University of Guelph, featured teams from Canada, United States, Russia, China and Mongolia. It is the only international tournament sanctioned by United World Wrestling and Wrestling Canada. The top senior wrestlers in Canada participated.
Taylor and Sadiku are graduates of Three Oaks Senior High School.
Taylor, who is still a junior-aged athlete at 20 but also competes in senior competition, received a first-round bye, and then defeated Hannah Franson of the Calgary Dinos by decision 4-1. Taylor then met Irina Ologonova, a three-time silver-medallist at the world championships, in the final. The Russian defeated Taylor by decision 3-1.
Taylor was nominated to the senior team for the 59-kilogram position to attend the Spanish Grand Prix wrestling tournament in Madrid, Spain. Taylor left for Madrid on Wednesday, and is scheduled to compete on Sunday.
Following this tournament, Taylor and the Canadian senior team will attend a training camp in Madrid from July 16 to 21.
The 21-year-old Sadiku, who is a full-time senior athlete, finished with an overall record of 3-1 (won-lost). He posted a first-round win over Melvin Arciaga of the Bears Wrestling Club of Alberta by decision 2-1, and lost to Ali Naser of Sunkist Kids from Arizona 11-0 on a technical fall in the second round.
Sadiku won by forfeit over Jacob Alexander Torre of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club in the third round, and completed action with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Marco Palermo of the Lakehead Wrestling Club in Thunder Bay, Ont., in Round 4.
