Successful weekend for volleyball Hurricanes

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Holland Hurricanes picked up wins versus the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular-season volleyball action Saturday.

The Holland College women began the day with a straight-sets victory before the men earned a win in four sets. Both matches were played at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE).

Women
In women’s play, the Hurricanes posted set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 to continue their undefeated regular season.
Abby Hyndman and Sam Gerbig each had nine kills to lead the attack for the Hurricanes while Kateia Barenaba added four.
Marissa Macaulay had a game-high 23 assists while Dana Trainor led a balanced defensive effort with 13 digs. Calandra Bychyk and Gerbig each contributed five digs.
Amanda de Carvalho Brito had four as eight other players had at least two digs.
The Hurricanes improved to 9-0 (won-lost) on the season and continue to lead the conference standings while the seventh-place Seawolves fell to 2-7.
The ‘Canes will return to action on Friday, Jan. 24, when they travel to Sackville, N.B., to visit the Mount Allison University Mounties at 7 p.m.  
The Mounties are currently sitting alongside the ‘Canes for the top spot in the ACAA standings with a 9-1 record. The ‘Canes won the previous meeting with the Mounties in four sets on Dec. 3 in Charlottetown.
The Hurricanes are back on home court on Sunday, Jan. 26, against the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams at 2 p.m.

Men
In the men’s match, the Hurricanes defeated the Seawolves 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.
Gordon Veitch led the offensive attack for the Hurricanes with 15 kills while Cole MacKey had 14 and Nathan Wills added eight in the win.
Simon Archibald and Brandon Hastings split setting duties and recorded 22 and 18 assists, respectively. Alex Joudrey led the ‘Canes defensively with 13 digs. Archibald added 11 digs and Veitch chipped in with nine.
The ‘Canes moved to 2-6 (won-lost) on the season with the victory and are in fourth place just behind the Seawolves (3-5).
The Hurricanes are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they make the long drive to Church Point, N.S., to take on the second-place Université de Sainte-Anne (USA) Dragons (4-5) at 2 p.m. The Dragons were victorious over the Hurricanes in five and four sets, respectively, in matches Nov. 2 and 3.
The next home game for the Hurricanes is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15, also against the Dragons.
