CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Jordan Stevenson struck out 12 Tuesday to lead the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders to a 1-0 victory over the Moncton Fisher Cats in New Brunswick Senior Baseball League action.
The righthanded ace from New Glasgow struck out two batters in all but two innings – he had one in each of the fourth and fifth innings – at Memorial Field while limiting the Fishers Cats to six singles. He didn’t walk a batter.
The visitors threatened in the top of the first inning when Justin Cormier and Lance Van Noy singled to put two of the first three batters on base. Stevenson struck out Steven Johnson and got Sam Lund to hit into a fielder’s choice.
When Cormier and Stefan Martin singled with one out in the third, Stevenson got a flyout to right before striking out Johnson again.
The Islanders struck for the game’s lone run in the bottom of the second inning.
Avery Arsenault walked and stole second base. Stevenson walked and Jonathan Arsenault hit into a fielder’s choice to put runners on the corners. Grant Grady hit an RBI single to provide the game’s only run.
Grady and Josh MacDonald each finished 2-for-4. Jonathan Arsenault, Dillon Doucette and Logan Gallant also added singles. MacDonald chipped in a pair of stolen bases. Stevenson walked twice in three at bats.
Lund threw well in the loss, limiting the Isles to seven singles. He walked five and struck out two.
Cormier went 3-for-3 to pace the Moncton attack while Martin, Van Noy and Shawn Barley had the other hits for the visitors.
Charlottetown improved to 5-8 while Moncton dropped to 3-7. Moncton had won the previous two meetings of the season by 5-0 scores. The Islanders travel to Chatham, N.B., for a pair of games with the Ironmen (3-6) on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
