P.E.I. pushes Ontario at soccer nationals


CALGARY, ALTA. – Prince Edward Island lost 2-1 to Ontario Wednesday to open the Toyota under-15 boys’ national soccer championship in Calgary.

Ontario opened the scoring in the 25th minute, Reid Peardon tied it in the 40th minute, but Ontario tallied the winner four minutes later.

The Island’s girls’ squad lost 8-1 to Alberta with Emma Langley scoring for P.E.I.

P.E.I.’s boys play Saskatchewan today at 1 p.m. Atlantic while the girls play Nova Scotia at 3:30 p.m.

At the under-17 tourney in Fredericton, N.B., the Winsloe-Charlottetown Royals lost 6-1 to Manitoba.

Connor MacDonald scored for Prince Edward Island in the 17th minute to cut the Manitoba lead to 2-1, but Manitoba restored the two-goal lead a minute later.

Rinor Hoxha scored three in the win.

P.E.I. is off today and plays British Columbia Friday at 4 p.m.

The Island’s girls’ squad, the R.C. United, opens play today at 1 p.m. against the host New Brunswick.

In the senior men’s competition in Surrey, B.C., the Fredericton Reds lost 2-1 to Quebec. Four members of SoccerStop P.E.I. F.C. are playing for the Reds.

Fredericton is off today and plays Ontario Friday at 7 p.m.
