SAINT JOHN, N.B. — The Saint John Sea Dogs scored twice in 1:04 early in the third period to defeat the Charlottetown Islanders 4-3 Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) action.

It gave the host Sea Dogs a split of a weekend series with their Maritimes Division rivals after the Isles won 4-1 Friday at TD Station in Saint John, N.B.

Saint John led 2-1 after the first period on Saturday but went to the third trailing 3-2. Dawson Stairs scored two minutes into the final frame and rookie Joshua Roy, last year’s first overall pick at the QMJHL draft, put the host squad ahead at 3:04. Both goals came on the power play.

Josh Lawrence scored the other two Sea Dog goals and added an assist while Roy and William Villeneuve each had a pair of helpers.

Lukas Cormier and Brett Budgell each had a goal and an assist for the visitors while Thomas Casey also scored. Drew Johnston and Noah Laaouan each contributed an assist.

Zachary Bouthillier made 29 saves for the win while Matthew Welsh stopped 26 shots in the loss.

Saint John was 2-for-3 on the power play while Charlottetown was 1-for-5.

Islanders overage forward Ethan Crossman did not play Saturday as he served the first game of a two-game suspension for a check to the head from Friday’s contest. Overage defenceman Brendon Clavelle, the Islanders captain, also didn’t play due to an upper body injury.

Saint John improved to 20-19-1-0 while Charlottetown is 22-14-5-0.

The Islanders play their first home game of 2020 on Wednesday when they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at 7 p.m.

The QMJHL trade freeze takes effect Monday at 1 p.m.
