SUMMERSIDE – Jonathan Rose has been selected to represent Canada.

The 18-year-old son of Hope and Rodney Rose of Summerside will play for the Canadian under-19 men’s rugby team that will tour Ireland from Dec. 27 to Jan. 7.
“It kind of feels surreal,” said Rose in describing his reaction to be selected for Team Canada. “It’s like everything I was working for has finally fallen into place. It’s hard to believe, but it’s finally happening.”
Rose, who plays the hooker position, is a 2017 graduate of Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside. He also captained the Three Oaks Axemen senior AAA club along with the provincial under-18 7 and 15 teams.

Outstanding talent
“Jonathan is an outstanding young rugby talent, and it’s been a real pleasure coaching him over the past three years and hopefully more down the road,” said James Voye, who coached Rose with the Three Oaks Axemen senior AAA team and provincial under-18 squad. “Not just the playing of rugby, but the training, diet and committing to the camp/tour costs it takes as a junior player trying to represent his country,” continued Voye. “I’m very proud of all his accomplishments, and look forward to him wearing the red Canada jersey this month, and hopefully join Kyle Baillie as the next Canadian international (player) from Summerside, P.E.I.”
Most recently, Rose helped the provincial under-18 7s team finish fifth overall out of 15 teams at the New York 7s tournament.
“The 7s tournament was fun, playing with a good group of guys, possibly the last time I’d play with them,” said Rose. “It was nice to win something, and have a good time doing it.”
