NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — The Tokyo Lloyd Memorial Hockey Tournament officially began at the Emera Centre Northside on Wednesday.

The tournament, in memory of automotive entrepreneur Lloyd MacDonald, will continue until Sunday at the North Sydney facility.

The sixth annual event is a fundraiser in support of the Emera Centre Northside. All money raised from the tournament will go towards the arena’s operating costs.

A father of 12, the elder MacDonald established the MacDonald Auto Group. He became known as "Tokyo Lloyd" after a series of television commercials in which he starred to promote his business.

Born in North Sydney, MacDonald began his career selling vehicles at R.J. Logue’s on the Northside. Later, he co-founded Scotsman Motors in Sydney, before establishing Lloyd MacDonald Sales in Sydney River. He would be joined by his four sons in the 1980s and the business expanded to become the MacDonald Auto Group.

MacDonald died on April 27, 2013.

The five-day tournament began with one game on Wednesday night, while three games are scheduled, beginning at 7 p.m., for Thursday.

Action continues on Friday and Saturday before the championship rounds are played Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m.

Entertainment will take place Friday night with Ian Aker and Fred Lavery at the Emera Centre. There’s no cost to attend.

On Saturday, The Privateers and High Society are scheduled to perform at the North Sydney venue. The cost is $20 per person and tickets can be purchased at the Emera Centre Northside.
