St. John's Junior Hockey League cancels remainder of season

League got in only a half dozen games before the latest shutdown

It turned out to the briefest of seasons for the St. John’s Junior Hockey League.

The SJJHL announced Friday it is cancelling the remainder of the 2021 schedule. The decision was made as the league approached the one-month mark in a shutdown that began Feb. 8 as the metro St. John’s area was hit by a COVID-19 outbreak.

That postponement came after the league had barely begun an already delayed schedule; only six SJJHL games were played prior to Feb. 8.

This marks the second straight season the St. John’s junior circuit will not declare a champion; Friday’s announcement came just about a year after the SJJHL cancelled the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
