SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton University Capers captured their fourth straight Atlantic University Sport men's soccer championship on Sunday, defeating the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 2-0 in extra time at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex turf in Sydney.
Peter Schaale scored the overtime winner in the 97th-minute to power the Capers to victory in front of an estimated crowd of 350.
Charlie Waters also found the back of the net in the extra frame for the Capers, who finished the regular season No. 1 overall with a 10-0-2 record.
Ben Jackson made no saves in the win for Cape Breton. Seamus MacDonald stopped six of eight shots for St. Francis Xavier.
Cape Breton had chances to score in the first half, but were unable to capitalize, sending the game to halftime scoreless.
The game remained tied through regulation time, despite the Capers controlling the majority of the play, but were unable to beat St. Francis Xavier keeper Seamus MacDonald.
In overtime, Cape Breton opened the scoring with Schaale redirecting a corner kick past the X-Men keeper. The Capers added to their lead in the 104th-minute with Waters finishing a beautiful pass from Cory Bent.
The Capers now advance to the U Sports men's national championship later this week in Montreal. Cape Breton will play on Thursday, however, the game time and opponent were not confirmed at press time.
St. Francis Xavier University will also play in the national championship as the second AUS representative.
