Newfoundland Growlers trade defenceman to Solar Bears

Defenceman Tommy Panico (4) has played only four games for the Newfoundland Growlers this season and two of them were this past weekend against the Toledo Walleye. Panico scored his first goal of the season and was plus two in the series. That’s good news for the Growlers, who will need widespread contributions if they are to have success on a 10-day, seven-game road trip that begins tonight in Glens Falls, N.Y. — Newfoundland Growlers photo/Jeff Parsons

They're getting future considerations for Tommy Panico, who appeared in 39 games last season

The Newfoundland Growlers are losing another player from their 2019-20 roster, but this time, it’s of the team’s own doing.

The ECHL Growlers announced Monday they have traded defenceman Tommy Panico to the Orlando Solar Bears for future considerations.

Panic, a 25-year-old from New Jersey and products of the UMass-Lowell collegiate program, appeared in 39 games for Newfoundland during their truncated 2019-20 ECHL seaosnseason, registering three goals and an assist.

The Growlers recently had four key players from last year’s roster — forwards Zach O’Brien, Marcus Power and Brady Ferguson, and defenceman Michael Kapla — sign free-agent contracts with European clubs.
