Goals aplenty as St. John's Junior Hockey League opens 2021 season

The official puck drop to open the 2020-21 St. John’s Junior Hockey League season took place Friday night at Jack Byrne Arena prior to a game between the Mount Pearl Blades and Northeast Eagles. Gerry Taylor, a Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Famer, and one of the league’s founding members, dropped the opening puck. ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Sixes were wild on the St. John’s Junior Hockey League’s season-opening weekend as five teams won games Friday and Saturday by scoring six goals apiece.

The SJJHL kicked off its 41st season over the weekend with a pair of games Friday, then four on Saturday.

The big winners of the weekend were the defending champion Conception Bay Regional Renegades, who came away with two victories.

The official opening took place Friday night at Jack Byrne Arena with a game between the homestanding Northeast Eagles and Mount Pearl Blades.

Gerry Taylor, a Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Famer, and one of the league’s founding members, dropped the opening puck.

Friday

Blades 6, Eagles 4
In Torbay, James O’Brien, one of the top scorers in the league last season despite being a defenceman, led the Blades with two goals. Ethan Moore, Tyler Power, Nathan Flynn and Brady Normore added singles. Kyle Rumsey had a pair of goals in a losing cause. Tyler Anthony and Patrick Farrell added singles.

Renegades 6, Stars 2
At the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts, Nicholas Oake paced CBR squad with two goals. CBR won the junior league crown in 2019. The 2019-20 season was cancelled last March. Nathan Tucker, Nick Gosse, Aaron Greenham and Aaron Peach added singles. Replying for Conception Bay North were Alex Franey and Braeson Carlson.


Saturday

Capitals 6, Warriors 2
At the Paradise Double Ice Complex, visiting Avalon received two goals from Regan Seymour. Colin McKinnon, Evan Gallant, Patrick Beer and Luke Connors also scored for he Capitals. Cameron Frost and Andrew Pottle had the Paradise goals.

Caps 6, Stars 4
At Twin Rinks, the St. John’s Caps got a two-goal performance from Nicholas Dunn. Ryan Costello. Matthew Mills, William Hins and Michael Williams added single markers. Replying were Ryon Williams, David Hibbs, Kyle Tetford and Mark Barrett.

Renegades 5, Eagles 0
At the C.B.S. Arena, Nicholas O’Brien had an easy time recording the shutout, stopping 10 shots for CBR in the only game in which the winning team didn’t score six times. Noah Parsons and Tyler Nickson both had two goals for the winners, and Aaron Greenham had one.

Flyers 6, Breakers 5
At the Trinity-Placentia Stadium in Whitbourne, Jacobs Evans had two goals for the Trinity-Placentia Flyers. Liam Shea, Brady Marche, Mark Davis and Adam Martino potted singles. Scoring for the visiting Southern Shore Breakers were Brendan Houlihan, Riley Coady, A.J. Doyle, Evan Raymond and Ryan Howlett.

Two games were scheduled Sunday, but the Trinity-Placentia-Blades matchup at the Glacier in Mount Pearl was postponed. The other saw Paradise travel to Mobile to meet the Southern Shore Breakers at the Ken Williams Southern Shore Arena.
