SYDNEY, N.S. — A former Cape Breton Oiler will continue his coaching career in Russia for the 2020-21 season.
Alexander Zhurik will be an assistant coach with Metallurg Novokuznetsk of the Supreme Hockey League.
The 45-year-old retired hockey player last coached with MHK Dynamo Moskva of the Junior Hockey League in Russia during the 2018-19 season.
The former defenceman played one season in Cape Breton, recording five goals and 41 points in 80 games during the 1995-96 campaign.
Following his time in Cape Breton, the Belarus product went on to win two Belarus championships with Dinamo Minsk and captured two gold medals in the World Championship Division 1, Group ‘A’ category.
Zhurik was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the seventh round, No. 163 overall, at the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
