The Joneljim Cougars will have a pair of new coaches behind the bench when they open the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League 2020-21 season in the fall.

The North Sydney-based Cougars announced the hiring of Brandon Syms as the team’s head coach on Friday. The New Waterford native will replace James Sanford.

The team also named Connor Rogers of Sydney as the club’s new assistant coach.

During his playing days, the 25-year-old Syms played three seasons in the Maritime Junior Hockey League with the Yarmouth Mariners and South Shore Lumberjacks. He also played one season with Portage College.

As for Rogers, the 25-year-old played one season with the Cape Breton Eagles during the 2011-12 season. He later played three campaigns in the Maritime Junior Hockey League with Yarmouth.

Joining Syms and Rogers on the bench will be assistant coach Chris MacDonald and goaltending coach Sheldon Burton.

The Nova Scotia Under-15 Major Hockey League is tentatively scheduled to start its season in October.
