Capers women advance to third-straight AUS championship game

SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton Capers women’s soccer team will play in its third-straight Atlantic University Sport championship game. 

The No. 2 seed Capers blanked the No. 6 seed Memorial Sea-Hawks 2-0 in the semifinal game at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex in Sydney on Friday.

Mackenna King and Amelia Carlini found the back of the net for the Capers.

Rachel Yerxa made three saves in the win for Cape Breton. Sydney Walsh turned aside three of five shots for Memorial.

The Capers took a 1-0 lead into the first half with King netting her first goal of the playoffs in the 41st-minute. 

Cape Breton would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 67th-minute with Carlini notching her first goal of the playoffs.

Cape Breton will play the No. 1 seed Acadia Axewomen in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex. 

Acadia advanced to the final with a 2-0 win over the New Brunswick Reds Friday afternoon. 

The Axewomen won the season series with Cape Breton 1-0. The lone game of the year came on Sept. 22, a game that saw Acadia edge the Capers 2-1.
