SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton Eagles announced the leadership group they hope will set an example both on and off the ice for the 2020-21 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season.

The team named 20-year-old Shawn Element as the club’s captain. He takes over the captain duties from Derek Gentile, who finished his major junior career last March.

Prior to being acquired by the Eagles last December, Element served as the captain for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and brings plenty of leadership skill to the lineup.

The forward finished the 2019-20 season with 38 goals and 62 points in 61 games prior to the season ending due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Eagles also announced Nathan Larose, Ryan Francis and Jarrett Baker will be the team’s assistant captains for the year.

Larose led all Eagles defenceman last season with 17 goals, while Francis finished the campaign with 24 goals and 72 points in 61 games. Baker recorded six goals and 39 points in 59 games.

Ryan Francis, right, is expected to be one of the leaders on a very youthful 2020-2021 Cape Breton Eagles squad. Francis, who turns 19 in December, notched a career-high 24 goals and 72 points in 61 regular-season games last year. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST
