Cape Breton Capers soccer teams secure semifinal byes in AUS championship tournament

Capers teams will host AUS soccer championship tournaments next weekend

MONCTON, N.B. — The Cape Breton Capers soccer teams wrapped up their Atlantic University Sport regular season on Saturday, both securing semifinal byes in the league championship tournament this week.

In women's action Saturday, the Capers downed the Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-1 at Stade Croix Bleue in Moncton.

Rookie Alliyah Rowe led the Capers offensive with three goals for the hat trick, while Rachel Leck added a single marker for Cape Breton (9-2-1).

Madelaine LeBlanc had the lone goal for the Aigles Bleus (2-8-2).

Haley Kardas made two saves for Cape Breton. Chelsea Burnham stopped four of eight shots for Moncton.

In men's action, Cape Breton and Moncton played to a 2-2 draw.

Charlie Waters and Peter Schaale buried goals for the Capers (10-0-2), while Adrien Nagy and Jean-Michel Dako replied with goals for the Aigles Bleus (3-7-2).

Viktor Lyczywek made two saves for Cape Breton. Christian Masimengo turned aside eight of 10 shots for Moncton.

On Friday, the Capers women's team tied the New Brunswick Reds (6-4-2) 1-1 at BMO Field in Fredericton.

MacKenna King scored for the Capers, while Sylvie Facteau recorded the Reds' lone goal of the contest.

Rachel Yerxa posted eight saves for Cape Breton. Brynn Nash stopped six of seven shots for New Brunswick.

The Capers men's team also played the Reds on Friday, beating the New Brunswick club 4-3.

Waters had three goals for Cape Breton, while Cory Bent chipped in with a single marker.

Alex Dodgshon, Ben Gorringe and a Cape Breton own goal was the offense for New Brunswick.

Ben Jackson made three saves for Cape Breton. Evan Barker turned aside five of nine shots for New Brunswick.

Cape Breton's women's team finish the regular season in second place in the AUS standings, while the men's club finish first in the conference for the third straight year.

Both teams will play in the AUS semifinal on Friday when the Cape Breton University hosts the AUS championship tournament at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex. Cape Breton's opponents will be determined on Thursday.
