SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – The P.E.I. Wave defeated New Brunswick Fusion 4-0 to win the under-16 division at the Miramichi competitive ringette tournament on Sunday.
The Wave jumped out to a quick lead in the final when Autumn Chandler fired a shot in the top corner just 22 seconds into the game. With a strong team defensive effort and solid goaltending from Kenzy Hawkins, that goal proved to be the winner.
The team notched three more goals before the end of the first half with Devon Costello, Alexa Carpenter and Cassie Gallant each finding the back of the net.
The team earned an automatic berth into the championship game by finishing first in the pool of five teams.
All weekend the team enjoyed solid goaltending, strong defence and timely goal scoring. That recipe was on display early in their first game versus the Harbour City Lakers as the team scored eight first half goals on their way to an 8-3 win.
During their second game of the tournament they skated to an 8-1 win over the Capital Area Thunder from Fredericton, N.B., before narrowly defeating the Halifax Hurricanes 3-2 in a tightly contested game.
The team now has another month of practice and exhibition games before heading to the Pierrefonds tournament in Montréal early in January.
