SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Roy Paynter is bringing home four medals from the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Two gold, one silver and one bronze.

The lone Special Olympics P.E.I. athlete on Team Canada won a pair of medals in his final two events of the international competition on Wednesday. He started the day by winning his second gold medal of the international competition after recording a time of 1:44.76 in the 100-metre breaststroke.
Paynter then followed that up by helping his Special Olympics Canada team to a silver-medal performance in the 4x50-metre medley relay after stopping the clock in 2:31.21.

Other medals
The 21-year-old son of Brian and Sarah Paynter of Clinton also won a gold medal in the 200-metre freestyle on Sunday. His time in that event was 2:55.70. Sarah is also her son’s coach on P.E.I.
Paynter, who started competitive swimming at age five and has been involved with Special Olympics since age 12, won his first medal on Friday – a bronze in the 100-metre backstroke. His time was 1:34.91.

Paynter, the 2018 Special Olympics P.E.I. male athlete of the year, was selected to represent his country after winning six medals at the 2018 Special Olympics Canada National Summer Games in Antigonish, NS., in early August.

Abu Dhabi is the site of this year’s World Games, which conclude on Thursday.
