Panthers hoops squads split with Tigers

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Reese Baxendale had 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 66-63 Friday in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball action.

Lauren Rainford added 12 points and Annabelle Charron 10 in the home-court victory for a Panthers squad playing without injured starters Jenna Mae Ellsworth and Carolina Del Santo.

Hannah Chadwick had 13 points to lead the Tigers while former Holland College Hurricanes guard Chelsea Slawter-Wright added 11.

The Panthers held quarter leads of 13-10, 27-20 and 50-45.

The Tigers shot better from the field (41-34 per cent) and three-point land (25-22) than the Panthers, who held the advantage at the free-throw line (80-72).

UPEI improved to 4-1 while Dalhousie dropped to 1-3. The teams meet again tonight in Charlottetown at 6 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Jordan Wilson had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers to an 82-53 victory over the Panthers in men’s basketball action.

The Tigers, the No. 2-ranked team in the country, pulled away late. Dalhousie held 20-14, 35-30 and 56-45 quarter leads before outscoring the home side 26-8 in the final 10 minutes.
Shamar Burrows added 12 points off the bench for Dalhousie while Jordan Brathwaite and Xavier Ochu each chipped in 11 points in the victory.

Dakelle Brooks scored 13 points while Jamesley Jerome had 12 points, on 6-for-7 shooting, and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers attack.

Dalhousie had the better shooting night from the field (46-43 per cent), three-point territory (28-22) and the free-throw line (83-56).

The Tigers improved to 4-0 while the Panthers are 1-4. The teams meet again tonight at 8 p.m. in Charlottetown.
